If using a pro audio analogue - digital converter can that bypass the computer sound card ?

If so, how would one get the hard drive to accept it ?

I've been looking at so called Audiphile sound cards, one in particular was the M-Audio 2496.

Seems it is a bit lacking in some respects. :(

Is there anything a bit better without costing a fortune ?
