#1 AC / DC

Post by pre65 »

Numbskull question of the day.

If one is using a DC module to heat valve filaments is there any need to ensure that the AC feed to the modules is the same phase for both channels ?

I'm thinking that DC is DC so it should not matter. :?:

as you thought dc is not oscilating so there is no phase. Therefore you don't have to phase orientate the ac in.

The only time phase comes into valve heating is with a push pull amplifier, DHT's in a pushpull pair will cancel each others hum if they are inphase with each other or better still on the same filament supply.

I don't think it will matter, but just for fun I thought up a reason why it might.

As both of the supplies are floating, the only connection between the two is via the two sets of cathode components. Any noise introduced from the primary of the transformer may create a differential voltage between the two floating supplies, that will produce a current between the two filaments via the cathode components. its possible the resultant voltage will be different dependent on the phase between the secondarys and the supplies.

As i say anything is possible, but don't worry about it :-)

Thanks Nick, that's the sort of thing I was thinking about.

DC to DC changing you need to have switched mode converter
