Hi Philip I like Phil too and us him for chassis, chokes. Fender indicator lamp assemblies and mains transformers among other things. For bulk buy components such as resistors and generic caps, like most on here I use either rapid electronics RS or Farnell. Your decision to use Philip is admirable a...

Re: Lesson Learnt (then forgotten within 3 months)

When we make mistakes at work, no one is to blame as long as we all sit down and discuss the lessons learnt, so these are my latest mistakes. Lesson 1 A 630 volt Cap can blow at 370 Volts. Tell me about it! Two generic 630V caps on HT decoupling duties became shorts and destroyed half of the output...

Well

I'm listening to Val Doonican at the moment to psych up for a Perry Como Christmas songfest later tonight.

AudioTalk - Cardigan country. That'd make a good slogan.

Para what? Listen Dave! When you get to be as old as me and Philip you'll find the Naim sampler goes perfectly with your pipe, slippers and nice cup of cocoa. You'd have to make sure your pacemaker was working properly and your toupee was firmly seated with that John Van Der Veer track though. You r...

Naim CD sampler No6

Anyone listened to the latest Naim CD sampler yet? It was a freebie on the front of HFW this month. A good variety of stuff with stunning sound quality in the finest Naim tradition. I can see the track 9/11 by John Van Der Veer becoming as ubiquitous as Eva Cassidy at Eggfests. Three acoustic guitar...

As far as how good things sound with different reflected impedances. People get far too hung up on this, probably because they are also far too hung up on loadlines and theory and other theoretical perfectionisms which are not borne out in a listening test. Hi Paul When I built Rocky I didn't give ...

Hi Ed

In my experience Hammond 1627s sound great with 2A3s and EL34s and were great value until they upped the price. The Sowter SE transformers I had and which Steve now has are absolutely superb, but they are far more expensive. (£300 per pair) You pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Hi Andrew Just in case youare starting to get p**sed of with the way things are going. Have a look at this. http://usr.AudioAsylum.com/images/2/24819/Amity_800.jpg This is what the guy said about his amp. After years of breadboarding and experimentation it was time to give these amps a good finish. ...

breadboarded a PSU today using a pair of 6D22S (like it says) - yeah okay. The 0D3s don't light up - boring it reads 152 volts though with or without the 0D3s - not enough current or ??????????? Hi Andrew Don't these tube regulators need about 175 volts across them to strike up? I thought they stru...

Heh Heh :D :D

I'd be an EL34 EH "spacious and airy at the top"

a) because I have no hair up there
b) because of some of the air-headed schemes I come up with

Hi Nick I think it was the ubiquitous Mr Jones who mentioned something about chokes needing a minimum current to operate properly. But I can't find the info in his book. Now......being a bit out on a limb with the pentode CC sunk differential output stage, I thought I had better investigate these pe...

Hi Andrew

Are you sure those resistors should be 22K?

If you have an HT of 290V and want 150V at the OD3 then you need to drop 140V across the resistor. Your current is 60mA which gives approx a 2.2K resistor: twenty times less than the one you have in.

That's if I'm reading the circuit correctly.

Funnily enough Nick, though you mentioned chokes in a humourous manner, I've just added 2 150H chokes in parallel into the power supply for the voltage amp and driver stages It has made a subtle change to the final sound of the amp. I would say there is a bit more freedom at the top than there was p...
