Re: Mac Mini as a Music Server

Hi Andrew, it’s probably the VLC player which plays the FLACs. I used to use it for FLAC playback when I had the 2011 Mac Mini as the music source.

Re: Mac Mini as a Music Server

Yes, the mini-toslink is probably the weak point in the wider scheme of things, but I'd need a modern DAC to use properly the USB/Thunderbolt hi-res capability the Mac has. My other 2010 Musical Fidelity M1 DAC has a usb input, but that is 24/48KHz and no higher. However the CD quality lossless ALAC...

Re: Mac Mini as a Music Server

Given that I’ll be getting a second hand 2020 M1 Mac Mini with 256g SSD off my nephew for a very reasonable price at the end of this month, I decided to retire my late 2014 Intel Mac Mini from general duties and set it up as a music server. The last OS it is compatible with is Monterey, so that’s th...

Thanks Simon.
Yes the performance of the amp does seem to have gone up another notch.

Re: More SEPs

Dunno about the cap size Paul. I’ll be perfectly honest: I looked at Pete Millett’s E-Linear amp and noted that he used a 40uF cap for his Ultrapath connection. He associated the cap size with the internal resistance of the KT88 in UL mode and argued that a 300B would need a at least a 100uF Ultrapa...

Re: More SEPs

Well today I was having a look through Vacuum Tube Valley, issue 16 and came across a 2001 Lynn Olson article entitled "Ultrapath, Parallel Feed and Western Electric." Now I know of course that in 2023, all this is old hat, but I was intrigued with Olson's argument that using the ultrapath...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - This Year’s Model. This is on the original Radar vinyl mastered by ‘Porky’ being tracked by an AT VM95CB priced at £30 ( really pushed the boat out there.) It was played to death back in 1978 on an HMV radiogram with BSR groove destroyer and ceramic cartridge t...

Re: forum colours

I've tried all 4 formats, including pro silver special and all seem as bad as each other. I currently view at 133%(3 clicks of ctrl +) which is marginally readable at the mo... my problem, as mentioned, is blue on blue...it just doesn't work for me. Does your PC have an accessibility control panel?...

Re: More SEPs

I think I can call the SEP a success now that one or two people have heard it. I've enjoyed getting to the current state of play. Although the SEP works superbly with Steve's hi-efficiency speakers, it still does a remarkably good job on my comparatively inefficient Mission 773 WAF friendly slimline...

Re: Mini meet at Steve's on Monday

Aye, both the MoFos were excellent. Loved the pair of them. It was also great to hear the SEP on hi-efficiency speakers. And to hear it with those blasted VT75s of course.

Re: Mini meet at Steve's on Monday

Great afternoon at Steve's:
Steve, Simon, Scott and me, bacon butties, loads of chat unrelated to hi-fi, a gaggle of MoFos, my amp, a 45 amp and Steve's PX4 to round things off. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
Thanks Steve for your hospitality and thanks to all for the good company.
