More tweaking of the driver stage this evening. The 400-0-400 CLC power supply giving 530V to the drivers has been converted to a simple LC setup which has dropped the voltage to 320V. Why do this? Well I began to question the need for a voltage this high, given the reliability problems I have had w...

I did a bit more tweaking of the driver stage today nothing more radical than bumping up the current a tad on the first stage to 1mA, just to lift the loadline up a bit The supply to the 12E14 constant current sinks was finally given snubbing caps around the silicon bridge rectifier which dropped th...

Hi Chris I often wonder what a linear PSU might sound like, but the jump up was so great from the stock PSU to the Maplin switcher that I can't see the improvement being anything other than subtle, if any. I could be wrong though as there has been some real heated debate between the switchers and th...

I'm probably selling my gm100's to Darren, say goodbye to all that madness. Don't blame you Paul. Those Electronluv GM100s at VSAC 98 (I think) looked more Dr Who than Dr Who! IIRC didn't they also need fencing off with scene of crime tape to keep the punters at a safe distance so they wouldn't eit...

i can't belive i'm thinking about building a 3 stage 300b amp.. how much more driving does a 211 need than the 300b? bet it not much more.. I was thinking on the lines of 41mp/41mxp/300b the 41 mxp has low resistance.. i've got a feeling to get it right it will need a seperate power supply from the...

Chris :D
Yep :) They're very good PSUs for Squeezeboxes IMO. A steal at the price.

I have two of these: one set at 12V powering the DAC and another, set at 5V, powering my SB.

Hi Simon,

The metronome design is open-source, as are the larger variants designed by Scott and Dave (Planet10) Dlugos, so we are unlikely to get rich on the back of them. :) Nontheless, it is nice to have some interest from those people who can make them in larger numbers.

Here's a sneek peek of some possible commercial FE108EZ Metronomes, caught on camera in a secret manufacturing facility in Siberia.

CNC machined cabs faced with ash....nice.

going back to low powered dht's bro, sorry I iever went after the big bottles, could have saved a fortune. Paul No....I don't think I'll be going down that route either. I'm quite happy playing with low powered transformer coupled push-pull amps and low powered DHT SE amps. All I need now are some ...

Hi Philip In a single-ended amp wouldn't you want a constant current source in the anode circuit rather than a constant current sink in the cathode. In this application a sink would cause 100% negative feedback via the grid / cathode path unless it was bypassed by a capacitor, in which case you migh...

Yes I think they are

EL37s were the Mullard equivalent to the 6l6 and the forerunner to the EL34. They do have a beautiful tone in UL mode. I got mine from Steve as a part exchange deal along with a few other small signal valves, for the Sowter OPTXs I sold him.

Hi Just an update on the now venerable old metronome FE108ES speakers. Simon's comment on a certain thinness about my speakers in comparison to his big Fostex horns made me think seriously about putting the subwoofer back into the equation. I hadn't used it it since putting the bit of wood beneath t...
