Thanks Ed, Nick & Steve

chassis now grounded a la Ed's suggestion. Really like this Chinese KT88 amp. Have changed many resistors to Kiwame, vol pot to Panasonic, and polyester coupling caps to Obbligatos. Now running in - but sounds very good right from the off.

Hi Ed I've just bought a Chinese Sound Luster KT88 from Andrew I and I'm happy with it. Mine too has no chassis earth and wondered if earthing via phono sockets was sufficient. I should be receiving some K42Y caps from Russia in the next few day (all being well), 0.1uf/250V. I should have some spares. How many do you need.
This is an ebay deal and I've been waiting 10 days, so it could be a while yet.
