El34s are great tubes... oopps. Am I an American? - am I heck! They are great valves and actually designed for audio use - unlike so many we use here. Let's face it: We love valves. There is the odd hint of mosfets but, why not! El34s as SE are superb, subtle, delicate and do the 'welly' too. They l...

Thanks for replying.

Some of what you say is missing Nick (the odd letter, the odd comma) but I know what you are saying.

That is the alternative I had in mind to what I have so far. I will try it.

But,

Why is what you suggest so much better?

simplicity itself - a line stage

PSU is brightened up from being choke loaded LcLc, with a couple of OD3s to give 300volts. Just using these VRs sharpened things up nicely, so no probs there. I decided to do a simple single stage pre/line stage so 76 or 6J5 for comparison. Off the anode to cap comes a 1mfd cap with a 1meg to ground...

Yeah but can you tell me a quicker and cheaper way of getting a TVC all ready wired. It is going in an altogether new pre-amp, which will look big, bulky and pretty crappy but will sound transcendentally wonderful :-)

I couldn't possibly just buy and use something 'off the shelf' could I. :D

I'd get out the iron!

if it goes flat it goes flat But seriously, when I accidently subjected a box of reconrds to a good heating, even the unwarped ones produced a chunk of noise everytime the needle went over the damaged (though not to the naked eye)part of the LPs

The secret to getting a great amplifier out of these unlikely but gorgeous looking little valves is .... the PSU. forget the output transformers - this is the world of PP. I thought I'd be cocky, sophisticated and altogether worldywise so went for a rather nice valve PSU. I shouldna' have bothered. ...

Well I know two people well who have big Tannoys that are 97dB -ish sensitive and both of these people use huge amps (e.g. six KT66s a side in PP mode). It is always best to have power in reserve and although I am foprever buildinglittle amps and getting great pleasure, I can't help feeling that pow...

You could do it but nb it ain't Loftin white just DC, but you know, 6AS7s can sound 'glassy' or hard, in the same way imho most Russian 'odd' valves do. ou'd prob. have to raise the voltage on the 6080 cathode and you'd lose the RC network of the cap and the grid resistor - worth doing just to see. ...

Yep, and there's a possibility of dreadful irony here, too.

I'm off to watch the telly. If its a larff its a larff, if not .... let's see shall we?

best to you all and laters ....
