I've tried pre made phono to 3.5mm stereo leads in the past and they all sound pretty awful.

Probably no better than hardware you already have at your disposal (possibly worse TBH).

I'd say the most important thing is getting your analog front end sorted properly - most PC sound cards will give reasonable results.
