Ed Glad to hear you pleased with yours as well. I think you are dead right about the bias BTW. Paul I obviously can't say anything about your amps/speakers but don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these are the best amps ever (that would be a stupid thing to assert), I'm just saying how great they sou...

F4s

As some of you may know Nick has made me a pair of First Watt F4 amps. I've got them up and running in my system right now. As I write I'm listening to JJ Cale on a Sugden Masterclass CDP (modded with the v. rare TDA 1541a S2 DAC chip), Basie + (Aikido circuit) preamp with 6n6p's, 2 F4's in parallel...

Hi early and welcome.

How do you like your Rega Saturn? I've heard good things about them and the technical approach would seem to set it apart from most CDPs.

Ed Yes thanks I will certainly try that. I do have other sources though and in any event I'm really keen to hear what a DHT with cajones, courtesy of the F4s, will sound like on my ESLs. Ian PS. Going to treat myself to one of those QNAP things. The price comparison engine results aren't showing any...

This is great! I'm going to have great fun trying these all unusual and arcane valves. The 76 sounds like a perfect starting point. Forget the SET amp, I'm going to start building valve buffers. Will need to pick your brains though Nick! I'm sure you are right about why Pass mentions the SET amp opt...

OK, but I wouldn't bother build this amp at all in that case, I would just use a single valve which Nick is planning to try anyway. Or build it for the 300b and use it properly. Yes I was being blinkered because Pass talks about using it with a SET amp but of course the point is, all I need is volt...

Did I hear you say you were to use 45s in SE with ELS? - hm, okay ... hm. I'm not sure my Ongaku would do very well in that department. 45s are very lovely valves though. Ah, I see what you plan. Even so though, an f4 is happy with ESLs??? Yes the man himself (NP) has driven 989s with a preamp + si...

Oh dear - guess what I've just ordered the parts for and I thought, too, that the front end ought to be a pair of buffer 76s, a) because they look nice b) should do the job really well as they are superb valves and very easy to implement c) can't stand the idea of having a totally SS amp. . Andrew ...

Maybe take a look at the Nelson Pass designs, I am just finishing the second in a pair of First Watt F4s for Ian, and I must admit I am rather impressed just how un SS they sound. I might just knock together a choke loaded 76 front end to try with them before having to give them to their owner :-)....

Thanks Paul. I do intend to build it exactly as per the instructions. Tweaking can come later. I think I'll go for the 45 as I've heard it said they are more linear than the alternatives. The 45 will be fine for my Quad ESLs. OK you think I've lost it don't you, but let me explain. Nick has bu...
