Hybrid OB / Horn project

Quite a while back I posted about this speaker project. For reasons I won’t trouble you with, I’ve not been able to progress things, but in a few months I’ll be in a position to set things up so I’m now looking to finalise the design. The speaker is centred around Joseph Crowe’s ES290 biradial horns...

Looking for at least 2 of these which are on back order everywhere I’ve looked.

Re: My Swansong speaker build

First off, a big thank you to Colin for inviting me over to listen to these speakers and for being a splendid host. After chatting about the drivers and the construction of the cabinets I sat down for a listen. I was immediately struck by the purity and transparency of the midrange and treble - I co...

Re: Wood options in 2023

Chipboard types. Presumably the high density ones would be best for our purposes: https://hanson-plywood.co.uk/wp-content ... uide-2.pdf

vinylnvalves wrote: Mon Mar 13, 2023 11:30 am Send me your drawing dimensions and I can give you an idea on birch ply, as I still have a stash, and as nobody wants anymore horns, it’s sitting there. Otherwise I would be looking at OSB, the glue damps it a bit. Anything but MDF......

steve s wrote: Mon Mar 13, 2023 12:07 pm Flooring grade chipboard is my choice, in my opinion it has less 'sound' than the best ply's.
That’s interesting Steve because I’ll soon be buying lots of it our for our house renovations - I assume you mean the stuff that’s used nowadays instead of floorboards?

Wood options in 2023

I am going to be making some U frames for some AE Dipole 12 woofers. Birch ply would be my material of choice but it’s such a crazy price now and given that these will be open backed I’m thinking MDF will probably be adequate. One idea I’ve thought about previously is to apply a fibre glass layer or...

Re: Interesting DSP info

I totally get the convenience thing and I’m with you. I wouldn’t dream of using a PC to play music unless I could run it headless and use a tablet as the interface. Multiple amps is a bit of a pain but I think it is going to be worth the hassle in what it delivers sonically. If my expectations of Au...

Re: Interesting DSP info

Steve Yes you need a PC or a Mac running a convolution engine to apply the filters generated by Acourate and Audiolense. So in my case that PC will run JRiver (which has an embedded convulsion engine) ED I’ve just seen this auto correction but I’m going to leave it in for entertainment purposes and ...

Re: Interesting DSP info

Well given the number of responses this obviously wasn’t as interesting as I thought ! I am inclined to think that a lot more hi fi enthusiasts would be interested in AudioLense and Acourate if (a) they understood enormous advantages these software packages bring to the party and (b) there wa...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Sounds like congratulations are in order Colin in relation to your new speakers, I’d love to hear them sometime. A mildly interesting anecdote (well sort of) about the SBA Be tweeter. A few years ago I exchanged some emails with an American chap called Tom Pezerella (almost certainly incorrect spell...

Interesting DSP info

I think most people would agree that DSP has the potential to be incredibly useful in relation to both speaker crossovers and room correction. It can achieve things which are simply impossible if you restrict yourself to the analogue domain. The widespread perception however is that all that utility...
