Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

Good job it is a hypothetical speaker and nobody is building it then
Seriously though, many small bookshelf speakers are tuned to around 70Hz, so not ridiculous, unless, like you said, you like bass

I have a LR4 high-pass at 45Hz just to be safe

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

I think whether room or speaker dominates depends on their relative frequencies. My living room has a strong peak at 50Hz, a large dip at 40Hz, and there’s a big suck out on the left speaker at 70Hz. A bass reflex cabinet tuned to 80Hz would be speaker dependent, below that, the room definitely domi...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

I guess we would have to put all of the large excursion Thiele-Small parameters in WinISD or similar to know the total effect

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

Not exactly. You're in the acceleration (rising response) region here, where as noted you can and do get variations with drive level due to the electrical & mechanical non-linearities / asymmetries in motor design, suspension[s] etc. Klippel is very good at revealing the reasons for those, but ...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

Frequency response, i.e. any deviation from a ruler-flat line from 0Hz to infinitely high is defined as linear distortion. Assuming you're working within the mechanical limits of the components, it's basically fixed and doesn't in itself show deviations. I don't think that this is true When you loo...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

Looking at Klippel tests, excursion seems to be the main thing that makes parameters vary - if excursion is low, the driver is more linear. I dare say some effects cancel and others sum though These are for my drivers: https://www.daytonaudio.com/images/resources/290-208-dayton-audio-nd90-4-klippel-...

But I think I need a compressor, the dynamic range is too much - I have neighbours!

Seconded, but when you start liking Des O'Connor the men in white coats will come.

Trust me, I know.
I think they have been and gone

Will wait and see what else pops into my head from years ago

Re: DSP and not DSP

Good point Nick, but it does tell you two things:
  • Distortion is lower than you might expect for a 55mm driver going to 50Hz
  • If you want a quiet life don’t live in a flat near a road
Diet, according to Dayton they are 3 1/2”

Re: DSP and not DSP

Hi Wolfgang, I have measured my speakers at about as good I can get using DSP alone: Driver anechoic IMG_5797.jpeg SPL at listening position, both speakers IMG_5799.jpeg Distortion (mostly below the noise floor) IMG_5800.jpeg I agree about flattening the speakers completely - getting a good power re...
