IslandPink wrote: Thu Sep 21, 2023 11:52 pm What does the panel think about having to drive at 10mph - which I did for half a mile on Tuesday morning, on my way to arriving late for work ?
One thing I like about automatic gearboxes (with torque converter) is the ease of driving in slow, stop start, conditions. :)

I would put my own money on the fact that a F1 engine is not at its most economical at 55mph, or 70mph, or anything like that.
I thought we were talking about cars on the public highway ? :?

If going at 30mph used no more energy than going at 20mph, how would it be possible to restrict the speed to 20mph?
A gearbox ?

Why then is the most economical speed (in terms of miles per gallon) more usual in top gear at main road cruising speed ?

Nick wrote: Thu Sep 21, 2023 3:18 pm You are just asserting "the engine may use the same amount of fuel" you need to show that's true.

I did say "may", but there is no easy way prove that.

It may be different for diesel engines with high torque ?

Re: Zero emission road vehicles.

In order to propel you faster the engine has to work harder, so you would have your foot down more and use more fuel. If you’re doing a steady speed, fuel consumption will be more or less the same in any gear, within reason. I don't agree. At (for example) 1500 RPM in 2nd or 3rd gear the engine may...

Re: Zero emission road vehicles.

But perhaps driving a little slower is better for our blood pressure? Is there really a need to be hurrying everywhere. So, often we catch up with the speedy driver at the next set of lights anyway. All these spurts of testosterone laden gas pedalling is more wasteful than going a little slower? Qu...

Re: Zero emission road vehicles.

OK, hadn't thought of that - what a silly bunt. I had a speed awareness course many years ago, and I still remember how much shorter stopping distances are at 30mph.(let alone 20mph) But I agree with you,20mph does seem unnaturally slow. As I drive an automatic car being in the right gear is not a ...

andrew Ivimey wrote: Thu Sep 21, 2023 6:58 am if the revs are the same at 20mph in 3rd gear as the revs of 30mph in 4th gear isn't petrol consumption more or less the same?
No. In your example one would travel 10 miles more in an hour.

MILES per gallon. :)

Re: Zero emission road vehicles.

New Government policy ?

"First, the government would push the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars - currently set to come into force in 2030 - back to 2035. The 2030 date has been government policy since 2020."

Re: what are you doing ?

I'm at Potters resort for a bowls week. Just got back from tonight's show which was about American music. The finale was dedicated to Elvis. The whole cast worked their socks off and the choreography was slick. Got two matches on Tuesday and Wednesday (four in total) and more Thursday if our team re...

One video I saw suggested that in China (Chinese domestic market) BYD Ev cars, supposedly the market leader, were in first place re quality control issues and instances of fires.

Nick wrote: Sat Sep 16, 2023 11:32 am I am a little confused. That article talks about priority for UK production. Exactly what UK production do they mean?
JLR for one, and probably Stellantis (Peugeot-Citroen-Vauxhall-Opel-Chrysler-Fiat). Even Aston Martin have an EV factory in Wales.

More to come I would think.
