Absolutely. DIY audio, particularly, is a deeply personal thing with lots of compromises.

Re: Directly Heated 1619 SET

Indeed Paul.

I wouldn't use MoFo over 45s if I had just one choice. But I use 45s for mid and treble, MoFo for bass and class D for sub. Seems to be the best of all worlds. So far.

Re: Directly Heated 1619 SET

I was surprised how close the MoFo sounded to the SET. The 45s have a bit more tone for me, triode love as Andrew L used to describe it, but the MoFo is nice and clean in the bass.

Re: Directly Heated 1619 SET

I agree with a lot of that Nick, particularly the Land Rover :-). I've ended up with a 45SE direct coupled to 96dB widebands above 300Hz, a MoFo direct coupled to 18" 96dB bass drivers, and a class D amp with subs. Really works for me. The crazy bit is the relative costs of the amps. It's diffi...

Re: C3g Aikido Phono

I've also been playing with another all-in-one PCB for the phono itself in KiCAD, but I've done a few layouts and I'm not really very happy with any of them. And there's a risk I make it worse. So I've drafted a smaller version of the RIAA filter board back in Eagle, hoping this might improve the sm...

Re: C3g Aikido Phono

For power I was going to use 9V batteries, but I think I'll go with 4 no. 4R25 6V torch batteries. They should last for a very long time and allows me to use +12V and -12V for the TubeCAD, and +12V up to +24V for the Boozehound. I'm still thinking about how I'll implement this, but I'm thinking a bo...

Re: C3g Aikido Phono

I've done a great deal of prevaricating with this. I've been back and forth with single and parallel versions of PCBs for the Boozehound, even considered just building it point to point on perf board. Anyway I'm going to get a parallel version fabbed which I can use as a single first, then add a sec...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

This seems like very bad luck to be going through so many bits. A maximum depth of the diameter of the cutter is recommended, but I tend to do a bit less as the cheap router I use seems to struggle a bit. I don't see why your bits keep breaking though. Very odd. Do you use just the one router or doe...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

They're a fair bit more expensive than the Rennies so should last much better... Be interested if you find the same as Steve and Max as I need some more - the moisture resistant flooring chipboard ruined mine including an uncut spiral bit I was trying out and overheated before I did much with it. ht...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

Wow that's bad luck with the router bits. What brand were they?

I've not use birch ply for 15 years or more, but I can confirm that floor grade chipboard is excessively hard on tools, especially when they hit metal inclusions in the chipboard...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

Masks aren't the nicest thing to wear for long periods. There's also a Trend P3 that came out maybe 5 years ago that seemed less clunky? I don't how it performs though, and I quite like that the other straps to my head as it feels secure. https://www.trend-uk.com/stealth-sm-trend-air-stealth-respira...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

I'm sure it'll take a while - there's a lot to do and it's supposed to be fun not a chore. One day at a time. :thumbleft: An FP3 mask is good enough for asbestos so should be good enough for wood dust. Perhaps the fit isn't quite a seal? I use one of these and can test the seal - never had any probl...

Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

Looking good, can't wait to see what a 300L cabinet actually looks like. I feel the router pain! I have a big 1/2" Triton in a router table but for free hand stuff I'm still using the half price special from Aldi or Lidl that cost £12.50 in the end. It's not great and I keep thinking I should g...
