Re: Anyone here understand tuning PID controllers?

Yup it's a sort of PWM. Thanks Nick for the tuning advice - Ive seen similar on the web, but with slightly different approaches, e.g. Back off 50% rather than 20-something. I'll give your approach a go tomorrow. I've used a smart plug to monitor the power usage as it approaches set point. You can se...

Re: Anyone here understand tuning PID controllers?

Good call on the Arcol resistors - 2 x HS100 330R is about 8 quid cheaper than 1 x HS200 680R as HS200s are a bit pricy... I'll stick those on a decent heat sink ank that should do nicely. The TD4 controller has a "learn" mode that auto-tunes... Not much documentation on it, but I'm using ...

Anyone here understand tuning PID controllers?

I'm experimenting with a PID-based controller for warming honey, but the controller is oscillating round the set point. The controller I'm using is a MyPin TD4 - very common controller but not in this scenario. I'm using 2 x 40W incandescent bulbs for my heating element and an old fridge as my insul...

Re: Nothing In Particular

I understand a good queen (one that's passive to promote a calm hive) isn't cheap? There's a lot of definitions of a "good queen": fecund, calm, suited to the local (micro)climate disease resistant, not prone to swarming, long lived, good honey crop, good progeny, good over wintering, pro...

Thought I'd try a different type of queen in a couple of my hives....

Re: Nothing In Particular

When you first mentioned this, I was determined to set it up. Damn. Another project. More standby power... Dead simple to set up. Re: Nothing In Particular

I have a similar thing running on a Raspberry Pi with a mic hanging out of the kitchen window. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/classify-birds-acoustically-with-birdnet-pi/ My son introduced me to it a while ago and has the same setup running in his garden in Somerset. It’s pretty accurate but it d...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Went of a farm walk yesterday specifically aimed at my beekeeping group - one of our members has operated a sustainable mixed farm for 35 years. It was a wonderful way of spending a couple of hours on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My first outing since the op last Saturday. One the the things that...

Re: Landrovers...

Yep. But try driving the Lexus 1/2 mile down a steep, narrow, deeply rutted and very very muddy track and then across a couple of ploughed fields whilst transporting a load of 45cmx45cm wooden boxes full of angry bees or a few 100kg of logs. I have a love/hate relationship with the Landy. On one han...

Re: CAD systems...

I've used Fusion 360 as it comes with my Eagle subscription.

I find it complex and clunky. YMMV.

Re: CAD systems...

FreeCAD is a bit clunky. SolidEdge is very good, but has a tiny general market share. I'm only interested in full 3D parameterised systems, rather than 2D, which are suitable for both 3D printing and CNC machining. Blender and some of the others are polygon based which can lead to models that can't ...
