Re: Doc Mods

You're probably right, reading on PFM, the crossover isn't that great and even then it was simply lifted from the SBL and minimally tweaked. It's wired with NAC A5 which I don't like as a speaker cable so getting rid of this will be a bonus too. I've often thought (although I have no evidence to sup...

Re: Doc Mods

I have undertaken doc mods on 6 pairs of speakers since 2009, when I chanced upon Richard whilst surfing the net for information on how to build speakers as I had been trying to build a diy pair unsuccessfully for 6 months. I now use them in my hifi room , family room and kitchen . An illustrative ...

Re: Doc Mods

I wondered about the tweeter. The metal domes don't appear to be highly regarded these days. Is the Linaeum tweeter for the Tandy sourced miniatures? Always been intrigued by those but new thougt of simply nicking the tweeters. Might be good for a super tweeter project?

Re: Doc Mods

Out of interest, which MC2s are they? The earlier ones had a single port in the rear and the later ones had two ports on the front as well as different woofers and tweeters. As the Doc Mods include blocking up reflex ports, can I ask about the suitability of bass units. I'd heard that ported speaker...

Re: Doc Mods

Whilst I accept and appreciate the value of the signal along with a bit of noise from Dr Bunsen, I can't say the same for Mudshark. There seems to be only noise. Have you anything to say about the Doc Mods Mudshark?

Re: Doc Mods

Thanks to all. I have a lot to learn. I thought "Tufnol" was a retired cricketer!

Edit: Smeege are you sure you're not a "Sole" Trader :D Nice to see another new member.

Re: Doc Mods

Good point. Also potentially gains in SQ?

Edit: Thanks to Richard for his reply. It wasn't visible when I replied to Philip, so apologies for not acknowledging it.

Re: Doc Mods

Going back on topic, can I ask about the Doc Mods padding resistor and capacitor please? Are they better off inside or outside the cabinet? Or does it make little or no difference?

Re: Doc Mods

I must admit, I didn't get the "singing pig" analogy first time round. Even after reading the martini one, I had to revisit Porktown. Now I think I get it. You're effectively saying the same as Nick, albeit th a twist: Look past the noise at the signal and decide whether it's worth it. You...

Re: Positioning of external xovers

Not sure I'm quite ready to tinker with the crossover as it would be trial and error (probably more ofbthe latter). Maybe I will leave alone after all. Thanks, Greg.

Re: Doc Mods

Thanks to Bunsen for the answer regarding BBC designs. I must admit to liking LS3/5As but I accept they aren't accurate (not even on voice IMO). I also like LS5/9s although I don't hear the same sort of sound as the LS3/5A, Hence my question about BBC design philosophy. I owned Epos ES14s which were...

Re: Doc Mods

Personally I don't think Bunsen has presented his opinions as objective fact. He's said it is about actually trying for yourself. However I do agree he refused to answer questions. When asked by Scottmoose which parts of BBC theory are nonsense, he refused to answer. I think it's a fair question and...

It's been warming for 3 days. Must be cold in your house :D Seriously it will be good to hear what this is like. Not many user reports.

Re: Positioning of external xovers

Thnaks for your answers guys. I already bi amp and therefore use 2 sets of cables to the external crossovers. I might try them closer to the amps as its neater for me. It won't be until Spring but I will report back.

Re: Positioning of external xovers

Surprised to hear this as I read recently that it was better to keep them as close as possible to the speaker. Far handier for me to have them near the amps. Is there a theory behind which is better?
