Re: TG "The Loudspeaker" Build (Sort of)

I also use the HF146 that worked fine at 300 Hz with a 66cmTractrix horn. In the mean time I replaced the "large" roundover with a wooden ring (horn now 55cm) and now cross over at 450 Hz with phenomenal results. This driver is a keeper and 300 Hz was no problem - even with the distortion ...

Re: Anti-virus for mac

I use Malwarebytes.

I would only be careful of russian (Kaspersky), chinese (don't know of any) or Elon Musk connected software.

MacKeeper behaves in ways that I do not tolerate.

Re: The cloud.

I often why Daniel is so abrasive - maybe just because he can? I also question what difference a contract makes when considering a cloud space to be someone elses computer. In my world it is none. It is still someone elses compiuter (or space running on maybe even a third parties computer - also som...

Re: The cloud.

Regardless of the details, as Nick stated, the cloud is just someone elses computer at the other end of an IP pipe. That means that they ultimately call the shots about everything that happens with that remote computer - regardless whether it is access to a service, a platform or infrastructure. I t...

Re: Hooking up Subwoofer with Class D amplifier

I would say, just try it. If it hums, you know that there is a ground loop to deal with. If not - proceed to the enjoyment stage. What we do not know: is this for your home audio, or for PA purposes. I often wonder why symmetrical connections (other than transformer coupling) are of any interest in ...

Re: Purifi-based monitor - options

In actual use, Jon will likely be around 2m from the speakers, and approx 3" down from the tweeter axis. So, I did another final measurement to represent that. I think this one used 1/6th-octave smoothing , bearing in mind that was just one measurement. As you can see, the slight rise to 10kHz...

Re: Quite possibly my last speakers

Scheme to physically time align the woofers and horn. I adjust the 3 bolts on the front and back of the mounting plate to get the right spacing.

Re: Quite possibly my last speakers

Sounds like a good plan Looking forward to the tweeter - not seen one like that before Examples can be found online with the search of Karlson Tube. DIYAudio and other forums have dealt with this in depth. My interest is getting physical phase alignment, low distortion and more of a "point sou...

Re: Quite possibly my last speakers

Very nice That 60Hz is going to be fun to fill in Do you know where it is coming from? I have similar on my left speaker as there’s a bay window at that side - the other side is open to the dining room, so I don’t have it on the right speaker You have it on both speakers even though your room isn’t...

Re: Quite possibly my last speakers

Here are the first measurements after a couple of days of tweeking. Biamped. No EQ, crossover at 500 Hz, room response from listening seat (3.5m). I just love this horn! 12dB/8va smoothing, no spliced in nearfield LF. I am happy at this early stage. Today I am working on cabinet damping. Sticking my...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

Good job it is a hypothetical speaker and nobody is building it then Seriously though, many small bookshelf speakers are tuned to around 70Hz, so not ridiculous, unless, like you said, you like bass I was thinking that if we have even music without extremely powerful bass, what happens below reflex...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

One could argue that a bass reflex design with an 80 hz tuning is the huge mistake if we like bass - regardless of what subwoofer that we use.
Then would come the discussion of how to even cross over to an 80 Hz tuned bass reflex design - plug the port and cross at 120 Hz or whatever.

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

I think whether room or speaker dominates depends on their relative frequencies. My living room has a strong peak at 50Hz, a large dip at 40Hz, and there’s a big suck out on the left speaker at 70Hz. A bass reflex cabinet tuned to 80Hz would be speaker dependent, below that, the room definitely dom...

Re: T/S parameters valid for normal listening levels.

I prefer to think of Thiele/Small as having nothing directly to do with optimising distortion or sound quality, rather just providing a desired level of “bass”. The inaccuracies of a proper alignment for given parameters are surely miniscule compared to room effects. In theory, a bass reflex (Helmho...
