What solvents should I use? I'm guessing soap+water won't quite cut it?

As a point-of-reference, it takes a LOT more effort to rotate the spindle than it does to rotate the motor spindle.

Just confirmed that my idler wheel is not sticking at all - a very light tap and it spins freely for more than a minute. The idler wheel seems to be free of bumps which could cause wow/flutter. Running the TT without the platter on and a strong single-point light source illuminating the wheel overhe...

OK all, did some experiments. With the brake pushed back [so that even when the power switch is set to "off" it does NOT contact the platter] the platter [which is disengaged from everything - motor & brake] stops within 1/2 a revolution . That can't be good considering someone else's ...

Darren,

Is the centre spindle meant to be difficult to turn?

It's actually difficult to turn when firmly gripped - I've removed the entire bearing assembly to test this out and I do not recall it being this difficult to turn at all.

Just a bit of background - I had left my TT unused for about a month, as I was travelling interstate and away from home. Then I first noticed some speed stability issues with my TT about a half-week ago. There was a noticeable wow and flutter, and I was having issues with speed stability. This had n...

Question for Garrard 401 owners

With your turntable disconnected from the mains and the power switch on the TT set to "On" (so that the friction stop thingamajig is disengaged and not in contact with the platter) - if you push the platter, how long does it rotate for? I ask this because my TT's platter comes to a stop al...

Thanks again Darren for that reply. :) I'm not sure if the 301 motor would fit in the 401 though - the "corrugated" 301 eddy current brake would need a bit more vertical clearance perhaps? (the 401's eddy brake is flat) My memory of the exact spacing between the motor and TT body on the 30...

Hello Darren, Thank you for your reply - I was actually most concerned about the motor in particular. I run my TTs hard - about 3 hours continuously daily and more on the weekends - and I think my concerns are understandable considering that these are 40 year old pieces of equipment! :) Cheers, Aaron

Dang. Reinventing the wheel huh?

I had no idea, I have never owned a Lenco before. Only a Thorens and a Linn.

Still though, does the idea hold any promise?

Something just crossed by mind. Assuming the ball bearing will eventually wear a pit into the bottom of the spindle, why not have the ball bearings free to rotate within the bottom of its holder as well? This way the "wear" is "split" 2 ways - 1/2 goes to the spindle tip, while t...

Darren,

If steel bearing bushes are able to wear out the hardened steel spindles, wouldn't a ceramic bearing ball wear a concave spot into the end of the spindle?

And any ETA on the replacement bushes? Will this be a user-replaceable modification or a job done by you good folks?

Cheers,
Aaron

Swapping parts between 401s of different vintages?

Hello all, I'm new here and like to say that I'm excited to be here! It's not often that you find a forum with a section devoted purely to Garrard TTs!! :D Anyway my question is pretty simple - I'm interested in finding out whether the mechanical bits - linkages, bearings, spindles, etc "swap&q...
